Setting Up Aluminium Scaffolds

by admin on January 5, 2011

Aluminium scaffolds are time saving and efficient when it comes to massive home repairs and even small renovations. Using a scaffold correctly can help you get the job done in less time than working on a ladder and also provides more security than a ladder can. To begin, you need to know about setting your scaffolding up properly.

Choose Your Scaffolding

Aluminium scaffolds are sold in many different sizes. You may find that a small-scale scaffold is the perfect size for painting the inside of your home while a much larger scaffold works well for the outdoor painting. When choosing a scaffold you may want to consider which projects you will complete most often. Scaffolds for home use can be as small as two feet by four feet while larger home scaffolds can be four by seven or larger.

You may find that purchasing or renting pre-made aluminium scaffolds is the best option. If you are a do-it-yourself type person then you can also build your own scaffolds with a scaffold kit. You will need clamps, aluminium tubing that makes the frame of the scaffold, and a few other tools. Casters can be used if you plan on using the scaffold for many projects. Along with adjusting screws, casters will make the structure much simpler to move around.

Setup

The setup for your aluminium scaffolds won’t take long but the process must be completed properly to ensure the scaffold is safe to walk on. You may have heard that you can build a scaffold with two ladders, but this is definitely not advisable. Two ladders do not have the same stability as a real scaffold and can actually promote falls since the ladder system won’t be balanced as you walk from one side to the other. A real scaffold, on the other hand, can provide the extra safety net you want when working high in the air.

One aspect of safety that may be overlooked is leveling the scaffold when working outdoors. There are leg extensions that you can use when the ground is more than a foot different on each leg. If you own your own aluminium scaffolds it just makes sense to purchase a set of leg extensions. Even if you aren’t using the leg extensions for your current project they can be used in the future. A scaffold can be set up to any length or height you wish using the aluminum tubing and scaffold clamps.

Use

Building your own aluminium scaffolds is a great way to get more done around the house but these tools should always be used with caution. Take the time to remove all the tools and materials from the scaffold before moving it, and always make sure everyone is off the scaffold before attempting to make and changes in its position. Scaffolding is safer than using ladder but still requires some basic safety precautions, the same as most tools. You can use your scaffold anywhere there is a level working surface.
